Theo-interfaciality is the provocation: drawing on Boris Groys's claim that software performs anamnesis on the believer's behalf, Bratton argues that augmented reality, which laminates signs onto perceived objects and eliminates interpretive distance, is a medium for "the Schmitt App," the automatic division of friend from foe. Its killer application is not advertising but fundamentalism. Google's Ingress game, Lashkar-e-Taiba's use of Google Earth in the 2008 Mumbai attacks, a creationist overlay of the Grand Canyon, and The Bible App on a hundred million devices are the examples; any closed self-referential platform is also a belief circle.

The Geoscapes section supplies the political geography. Fanon's account of Algerians filling jammed radio static with battles they were sure had been broadcast is the prototype of interfacial politics. A geoscape, added to Appadurai's lexicon, is "a contested terrain of contested terrains," the field on which cosmograms compete to enforce a sovereign description of the world; it is not a neutral plane, as Google Earth purports to be, but exactly as full as the spaces that compose it. The Mumbai lesson is not that jihad fit inside Google Earth but that Google Earth fit inside the jihadi map. The defense against totalitarianism comes "not from any axiomatic reverence for nonhierarchical horizontality but from the multiplication of verticalized totalities one on another."

### User Layer

The User is not a kind of creature but a position, "a category of agents." The Apollo astronaut, a composite of life-support systems, gut microbes, and ground control, is the figure; the Enlightenment's atomized individual persists by drawing nourishment from each Copernican trauma that should have dissolved it. Section 58 traces the User's origins in design research, from Dreyfuss's "Joe and Josephine" through Taylorism and Lazarsfeld to the persona method: actual consumers are "the shadows of the personified simulations of ourselves," and Cloud profiles push the ratio of Users to personas toward one to one. Two tracks follow, in each of which the subject is first overdetermined and then dissolved by the same process. Bratton states his stake flatly: Anthropocenic humanism is a symptom, "powered by a gnostic mistrust of matter, narcissistic self-dramatization, and indefensibly pre-Copernican programs for design."

The first track runs through the Urbanian pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai Expo, where mannequins of the Reids from Phoenix and the Hagens from Ghana were overlaid with consumption dashboards, a cosmopolitanism of "comparative shadows"; Saul Griffith's calculation that he draws 17,027 watts against a world average of 2,250, which shifts the unit to a single meta-User; the Quantified Self read through Lacan's mirror stage; and Gordon Bell's MyLifeBits, a mirror held to a mirror. Increasing the intensity, granularity, and reflexivity of self-information first produces "a cartoonishly overactualized diagram of the self," then exceeds the boundaries of self and other: "the self burns brightest just before falling apart." Larry Smarr, founding director of Calit2, who tracks his genome and gut microbiome and diagnosed his own Crohn's disease before doctors did, makes the point corporeal: there is more nonhuman DNA inside the skin than human, and "we secrete more information than we ourselves constitute."

The second track is the "death of the User." Bratton rejects Agamben's unidirectional apparatus, in which only humans are subjectivized; prostheticization is "a crisscrossing field in which humans themselves are just as likely to be the prostheses." Three guises follow. The animal User: Garnet Hertz's robot piloted by a hissing cockroach, uncanny because "living dirt" occupies the driver's seat, and Natalie Jeremijenko's OOZ, a zoo without cages built on reciprocal interfaces. The AI User: Siri, default-female and reliably subordinate, against which Bratton's students designed moody and unreliable assistants; AI agents must evolve beyond "sycophantic insects," and Amazon Mechanical Turk shows humans appearing as AIs. The machine User: the driverless car as "a car-shaped end device within a larger Cloud platform," whose impact arrives only as a swarm and whose roads will be a contentious frontier between Cloud Polis and state. The closing section argues that the User position is "itself a microplatform within the macroplatform of The Stack," that nonhuman Users cannot inherit positions such as citizen or driver, that User rights must not be reduced to the property rights of the apparatus owner (Cory Doctorow's rented artificial eye), and that sovereignty should be located "not in the encapsulated person who steps into the User position but in the position itself." The NSA's focus on metadata is read as a policing of columns rather than persons. "Forget human-centered design; we need to design for what comes next."

### The Stack to Come

The third part turns to projection. Section 68 recapitulates the layers in one vertical tracking shot and then generalises: the Cloud's social contract is "more extractive than constitutional," Stacks intersect so that one platform's User layer links to another's Interface layer, and exit is possible "at whatever level." Sample Stacks range from a human on Google powered by coal to a kid in Lagos spoofing addresses of pirated bicycle cranks on an AfriNIC Continent Cloud powered by a nuclear plant on Lake Chad. "We need not one but many Stack design theories."

The Earth layer to come introduces "comparative planetology" and a "second planetary computer" laid over the first, which governs by governing its model. Bratton is blunt that we already fail to act on the data ecologies give us; higher resolution will not fix a governance problem. He names the "crisis of ongoingness," dismisses innovation discourse as "placebo technoradicalism" ("We'll have Google Glass, but still also business casual"), inverts Latour ("there is no local, only global"), reads climate denial on the right as action on behalf of enclave consolidation, and proposes geodesign, every planetary science rotated "from ways of knowing toward ways of making." The Cloud layer to come treats Cloud feudalism and generalized secession. Fresno is nominated for "first-mover disadvantage" in the evolution toward broadband manorialism, with Alex Rivera's Sleep Dealer supplying fruit picked by drones from Tijuana. The catalogue of secessions (charter cities, houkou, gated communities inside gated communities, "poor doors," Puerto Rico's gated public housing) is not interoperable as Westphalian states were. Balaji Srinivasan's "Silicon Valley's Ultimate Exit" and Larry Page's "Google Island" are the targets; the latter fails the Biosphere 2 test, since a sealed experiment means nothing outside itself and a leaky one is just another enclave. Two principles result: "no voice without design," and "a right of exit without symmetrical rights of entrance is an empty promise." "When exit becomes a privilege... it stops being a philosophical principle and starts being a weapon." Postel's robustness principle is the better platform politics.

The City layer to come addresses the surplus of utopias. Mohamed Atta, who held a master's in urban planning, is read as a "utopian urbanist." The "utopia of security" produces the "glass fort": the Kieran Timberlake embassy in London, transparent and bunkered, and Morphosis's CalTrans building, whose sculptural gestures are its bomb deterrence. Security's pathology is rendered through the Cold War fact that the United States and Soviet Union never bombed each other but detonated 174 and 285 megatons on their own soil. The Address layer to come is the economic core. Platform philosophy "demands its own Hobbes, Marx, Hayek, and Keynes." Soviet cybernetics is set against Hayek's catallaxy, and platforms are shown to combine both: Walmart and Amazon know suppliers' costs better than suppliers do and run a "synthetic catallaxy." Jameson's "Walmart as Utopia" supplies the dialectic of affordability producing poverty. Bratton's answer to the joke that communism's greatest accomplishment was Apollo is that it was Google, "Google Gosplan," PageRank being collective evaluation centralised into one platform at a unit price of zero. Deep address then meets money: the financial crisis as a crisis of addressability, carbon as a possible reserve standard ("why not to C"), and Bitcoin as "both a 17th century and 21st century currency" whose value expresses burned carbon. The Interface layer to come pairs deep address with ambient interface and locates algorithmic governance "in interfacial couplings themselves," where the exception is automated several times a second; a regime whose model cannot be reprogrammed by new signals "is a theocracy." The User layer to come begins from Engelbart, reads the security triad of knowing, having, and being as universal suffrage, predicts that human-driven cars will be defended as "arms," argues that encryption "automates the free-rider problem," and uses Yanukovych's text to Maidan protesters ("Dear subscriber, you are registered as a participant in a mass disturbance") to show individual identity clumsily overlaid on an emergent crowd.

### The Black Stack

The conclusion declines Clinton's question on its own terms. The Stack offers "no messianic historical redemption; it is no one's 'coming community.'" There is no Angelus Novus, and if computation leads to desolation "then perhaps it is our own fault." Biosphere 2's winner was the ants that beat the cockroaches that drove the humans mad, so charter cities may run on stigmergy rather than algorithms; because governance is defined by what it senses, sovereignty is epidermal and "chemistry always wins." No tabula is ever rasa; design innovates on the archive. Section 76 restates the posture: what is most legal may be most dangerous, crises invite acceleration, inertia, and fundamentalism ("fight, hide, and flight"), and the question is whether The Stack can power a "subtractive modernity." To readers who assume "mathematics plus the force of law equals totalitarianism," Bratton says other issues are more pressing for them. To build The Stack-to-come one must first imagine it in ruins, and design must work both with matter in the void and with information as the world, after Meillassoux's "inverse Epicureanism."

The concluding remarks gather the threads. "Forget User-centered design"; sometimes you are the User of the drone and sometimes the drone is the User of you. Design "needs more and better villains." The shift from scenario planning to "apophenic eschatology" means the relevant totalities may be the dumb ones, Home Depot rather than the smart city. The "Oedipal discourse of privacy and transparency" produces the neoliberal subject as preparanoid self-mastery; Bratton's axiom is that no one is likelier to commit atrocities than someone who believes he acts in self-defense. Google's uProxy, which pairs a User in the "Bad Internets" with one in the "Good Internets," models the composite proxy User, whose components need not know which meta-User they serve "any more than the microbial biome in your gut needs to know your name." The Black Stack has three senses. The "big haul," the decade of intercepted communication since the Patriot Act, is "a library of the real" that may be excavated by future AI archaeologists, leaving each of us "a little Ozymandias of cat videos and Pornhub"; next to a Google Gosplan, the NSA may one day look like "the public option." The tabula plenus is a world so full it can be composed only by subtraction, and the Stack's modularity means any layer's content, including "the masochistic hysterical fiction of the individual User," can be replaced: "The Stack is designed to be remade." The final sense is the last Copernican trauma: the real nightmare is not the machine that wants to kill you but the one that does not see you at all. The Black Stack "may also be black because we cannot see our own reflection in it," and its geopolitics is "less eschatological than chemical," grounded in isotope decay rather than historical dialectics.
