# Accidental Megastructure

*The Stack*'s name for planetary-scale computation as it actually exists: not a single giant computer but continental- and atmospheric-scale infrastructures (cables, data centers, satellites, protocols, handsets) that are computational at their core. "The Stack is an accidental megastructure, one that we are building both deliberately and unwittingly and is in turn building us in its own image" — a machine that is also a "state," "not the result of some master plan, revolutionary event, or constitutional order" but "the accumulative residue of contradictions and oppositions that arose to address other more local" problems. Each layer is "a technology for accidents," and the megastructure's essential accident points toward geopolitics other than today's. The research statement treats the state-funded accidental megastructure as the warm-up for privately funded, strategically composed AI stacks (*Hemispherical Stacks*); "accidental" carries the critique that it was never designed for a viable planetarity.
