Paradox of Intelligence
A working definition written for this wiki from the notes · first appears in Planetary Sapience ()
Bratton's name for the bind that frames Antikythera's Planetary Sapience research: complex intelligence grasps its own evolution, its planet's age and its anthropogenic agency at the very moment it learns that this agency has endangered its future. In the Speculative Philosophy lecture he compresses it as waking "in a house on fire" that burns because of the waking; the programme overview calls it the "decisive paradox" that sapience is cosmically rare and the chief cause of its own precarity, and The Noocene makes it epoch-defining. Moynihan's Bildungsroman lecture gives the historical version without the label: predicting nature to manage its risks breeds anthropogenic risks of its own, yet recognising them is already an accomplishment. Recursive Niche Construction explains the paradox mechanically; Viable Planetarity is meant to answer it. Bratton leaves open whether intelligence is adaptive or self-extinguishing, asking instead what would make it adaptive.
