# Agency Precedes Subjectivity

> A working definition written for this wiki from the reading notes; not Antikythera's own wording. From Antikythera Wiki (https://antikythera.wiki/terms/agency-precedes-subjectivity), an independent guide to Antikythera's published work.

Bratton's slogan for the core irony of planetary sapience: humans (and the species and systems that cultivated them) had been terraforming Earth for centuries before planetary computation — satellites, climate models, sensing networks — disclosed that this was happening and so produced the idea of an "Anthropocene." Planetary-scale agency came first; awareness of oneself as that agent came after, and only through technical mediation. Bratton notes this inverts how philosophy classes teach it (subject first, then action) and suggests it is where the questions should be honed. It pairs with the "house on fire" paradox: sapience wakes up inside consequences it already caused.
