# Model Epistemology

Bratton's phrase, spoken in Speculative Philosophy of Planetary Computation and argued out in For a General Theory of Simulations, for the disclosing side of simulation: computational models are how realities too small, too vast or too distant to observe become thinkable at all. The argument runs through astrophysics, where sparse and difficult data are built into costly models whose predictive success is taken as proof of descriptive fit, and through the M87 black hole, imaged only after decades of mathematics and rendering had told the Event Horizon Telescope where to point and what to expect. Bratton treats this as simulation acting as one of Lem's Existential Technologies rather than an instrument, with cosmology as "the meta-model of all models." The counterweight is de Monchaux's Paradox of Simulation, where models that shape reality grow closed to view; Galison adds that the real image still stunned its longtime simulators.
