Human-AI Interaction Design
A working definition written for this wiki from the notes · first appears in HAIID: Human–AI Interaction Design ()
Bratton's name (HAIID) for the design field that succeeds human-computer interaction once the thing interfaced with can parse social behaviour. HCI worked through spatial metaphors; HAIID works through psycho-social ones: mirroring, inferred intention, personality. After Alignment compresses the shift into a move from click-paths to synthetic personalities, with human psychology's risks attached: folk ontologies of what the AI is and wants are unavoidable, and a personal AI becomes an external mental model of its user, where the Inverse Uncanny Valley arises. The 2023 studio project (Morgan, Scott, Barcay) catalogued hundreds of such syndromes. In 57 Ideas Bratton argues that bidirectional alignment is built one interaction at a time, making HAIID where Productive Disalignment takes shape. He expects it to begin as a subset of HCI and eventually absorb it; Accept All Cookies warns that importing Design Thinking would be "criminal."
