# Copernican Trauma

Freud's name for the decenterings (Copernicus, Darwin, psychoanalysis) that remove the human from a place of intuitive privilege, and Bratton's recurring figure for what AI does. *The Stack* already speaks of a "cascade of Copernican traumas — from Darwinian evolution to postcolonial and ecological inversions, to transphylum neuroscience and synthetic genomics, from nanorobotics to queer artificial intelligence" that should erode the atomized-individual User, and of the trauma of becoming "supporting actors in the arrival of the post-Anthropocene." The research statement makes the astronomic perch itself one. In *SPoC* and *57 Ideas* the term is valorized: protecting AI's Copernican trauma — its disclosure that intelligence is not what it feels like — is part of anything calling itself AI ethics, and "the real Copernican trauma at hand" is realizing the preconditions for planetary intelligence to be adaptive.
