# Cognitive Infrastructures

Antikythera's name for the condition where AI stops being a program and becomes part of the built systems that sense, decide, and act. The 2024 studio compendium states the thesis as a chiasmus (AI is built into infrastructure while infrastructure acquires cognition) and grounds it in natural intelligence, which arises among many agents at landscape scale, not inside one brain. Bratton's lecture adds embodiment: a distributed AI's body may be the whole artificial landscape, people live in AI rather than with it, and decisive exchanges may run between AIs. The sense shifts across works: After Alignment narrows it to symbolic reasoning embedded in non-anthropomorphic materials, Bernac and colleagues insist such systems form frictional ecologies rather than one layer, and the Research statement folds it into Planetary Computation. It is the umbrella over Productive Disalignment and Human-AI Interaction Design; Hayles's Cognitive Nonconscious offers a compatible account of cognition without consciousness.
