# Planetary Self-Representation

> A working definition written for this wiki from the reading notes; not Antikythera's own wording. From Antikythera Wiki (https://antikythera.wiki/terms/planetary-self-representation), an independent guide to Antikythera's published work.

The claim that a planet's technosphere comes to know itself by modeling itself, a precondition of planetary intelligence rather than a by-product. Maughan's Infinity Mirror carries it: the climate crisis was foreseeable only because climate models existed, and Earth-2 and Destination Earth are read as Frank, Grinspoon and Walker's conditions for planetary cognition arriving in software. A footnote gives the mechanism: as cortical columns run thousands of competing models, Earth builds ever finer models of itself, and self-representation is the first step toward autopoietic "going-on." The phrase is Antikythera's rather than Maughan's, whose terms are mature technosphere and simulations as "sovereign actors." Bratton supplies the parallel: planetary computation gives Earth "a mirror with which to understand itself" (Planetary Sapience), and foundation models are how the planet "represents itself to itself" (Accept All Cookies). Relatives are Digital Twin and Noösphere; the limit case is Simulation Point Omega, where the self-model outgrows its data.
