# Cultural Determinism / Social Reductionism

> A working definition written for this wiki from the reading notes; not Antikythera's own wording. From Antikythera Wiki (https://antikythera.wiki/terms/cultural-determinism-social-reductionism), an independent guide to Antikythera's published work.

Bratton's name for the humanities' orthodoxy that nothing causes culture but culture, so that anything, AI included, is "a reflection of that culture and nothing more"; "the most militant guise of humanism." The research statement calls it a self-banishment to irrelevance that conceals philosophy's role as the source of new sciences. *Accept All Cookies* returns to it repeatedly: the humanities' doom scroll (entry 13), the "view from nowhere" reclaimed as a "view for anyone" that resists cultural determination (entry 16), the culture war over whether worlds create planets or planets create worlds (entry 18), and the suspicion of space exploration because it folds the precultural and allocentric into the present (entry 93). Reflectionism is its AI-specific form.
