# Theory of Mind

The ability to model other minds — and, recursively, their models of you — at increasing "intentionality levels." For Agüera y Arcas it is not one skill among many but the heart of intelligence: it powers social intelligence explosions (Humphrey, Dunbar), enables counterfactuals and planning, motivates language, and, applied reflexively, produces the self, free will and consciousness. It operates within brains as well as between them (cortical regions modeling each other, the octopus's arms), and it is the only available test of whether there is "anybody home": philosophical zombies are incoherent because sustained interaction violates a missing theory of mind. "In a sense, theory of mind *is* mind."
