# Inverse Uncanny Valley

> A working definition written for this wiki from the reading notes; not Antikythera's own wording. From Antikythera Wiki (https://antikythera.wiki/terms/inverse-uncanny-valley), an independent guide to Antikythera's published work.

Bratton's inversion of Masahiro Mori's uncanny valley. Mori's unease comes from an artifact that nearly passes for human; the inverse arises when a person meets themselves as a machine models them, a rendering recognizably you yet not, which After Alignment says feels more real than the self known from inside. It first appears there, where personal AIs are external mental models offering "the self in the third person." The Cognitive Infrastructures lecture reframes it as a symptom of AI as an existential technology, a Copernican trauma to the species' self-image, and makes protecting the estrangement a duty of AI ethics rather than a defect to design away. Accept All Cookies adds the mechanism: being read as an "optically readable entity" with contours and surfaces. It belongs with Reflectionism and Productive Disalignment; its nearest neighbour outside Bratton is Hayles's claim that LLMs describe the human Umwelt from outside.
