# Gnostic Technologies

Konior's first sub-kind of existential technology, named after the "gnostic machine" Lem mentions in Summa Technologiae: a device juggling more variables than any scientific method can and returning a theory its users might be unable to use. Gnostic technologies automate the making of knowledge by loosening its dependence on human understanding, and Konior argues they already exist: non-interpretable deep learning such as AlphaFold, AI sifting SETI data, and models finding structure in whale song deliver results while their internals stay opaque, adding to knowledge without making it intelligible. At stake is epistemic authority, and who holds agency when a machine exposes problems its user never suspected. A footnote concedes that calling this knowledge requires cognition distributed across human-tool assemblages, close to the Cognitive Nonconscious. The term appears nowhere else in the corpus; Bratton's Epistemological Technology is its nearest kin but stresses what instruments disclose to humans, not what they withhold.
