The research statement's diagnosis of the present: technology — planetary computation especially — has outpaced the concepts available to describe, let alone guide it, so that "Human agency exceeds human wisdom." Distinguished from the utopian condition in which imagination outruns capability. The Synthetic Intelligence section narrows it to *AI overhang*: unused or unacclimated AI capacity affecting not just narrow domains but how civilizations "understand and register their own organization." *After Alignment* splits this further into an *application* overhang (society can't integrate what AI does) and an *epistemic* overhang (science can't integrate what AI discloses) — see **AI Epistemic Overhang**. Philosophy's job under overhang is invention of concepts, not application of inherited ones.
