Input a machine draws from the world through channels no governor provisioned — the autofocus lens taking the lighting conditions, and, at the limit, Adrian Thompson's 1996 evolved FPGA circuit exploiting the analog physics of one particular chip through five apparently disconnected cells. It is the hinge of the article's account of generative darkness, formalized as three spaces: configuration space *a*, solution space *b*, and readable space *c*, the configurations that can be backtraced entirely to what the governor supplied. Solutions in *b* ∖ *c* — Thompson's circuit, AlphaFold's folds — carry auxiliary supply, and so always look to a governor like a mistake, since anything recognizable as a good decision was something the governor already knew how to want. In a Class 3 factory the auxiliary supply becomes the whole supply and *c* is coextensive with *a*: readable only in the sense that the world is readable.
