# The Interpreter

Gazzaniga's name for the language-specialized (usually left) hemisphere's habit of generating a fluent narrative for actions whose real causes it cannot see — the split-brain patient who explains a shovel by the need to clean a chicken shed. Choice-blindness experiments show everyone does this. Agüera y Arcas reads it not as a bug but as what cortex always does: predict and follow through, here by "autocompleting" a story. It explains why a Transformer can give a right answer and a wrong account of it, since it too has no access to the cascade that produced its output, and it suggests the interpreter may be best understood as an outpost of one's interlocutor's brain.
