# Social Fractal

> A working definition written for this wiki from the reading notes; not Antikythera's own wording. From Antikythera Wiki (https://antikythera.wiki/terms/social-fractal), an independent guide to Antikythera's published work.

Agüera y Arcas's picture of intelligence as nested mutual modeling at every scale. In the film: "We have the illusion of being singular, because we really are like a fractal of mutual predictors that are all kind of on the same team … There's no homunculus, there's no center. It's just a fractal cascade of mutually predictive models"; hence "Intelligence is fractal, meaning it's social within as well as without." The book states it as a summary thesis — "Intelligence is multifractal. Intelligences are made of smaller intelligences, and are defined by the predictive relationships among those smaller intelligences" — and asks whether brains are "societies" of neural circuits that evolved to model each other. The Noema essay names it "social fractal." Distinct from the journal's *Recursive Modeling*, which is about models reshaping what they model.
