Maughan's coinage, inside the article's scenario-fiction coda, for the anticipated moment when "the representational complexity of the system doing the modeling surpassed all the available data it was expected to model." It first appears (2034, in the fiction) as an uncategorizable rise in noise and error across Earth's most advanced simulations, is mistaken for a black swan, and is then recognized as something expected since the 2020s — "like Y2K or artificial general intelligence," a focal point for speculation. The open question it names: does "overfitting reality" produce "epistemic black holes," a loss of any ground truth to act on? The text sidesteps rather than answers, moving to the energy problem and the orbital Infinity Mirror. Useful as the limit case of model epistemology and a relative of model collapse.
