# Platform Unconscious

Sherman's relocation of the unconscious from psyche to infrastructure. Against Freud's hidden motives, the unconscious is "embedded material": the constraints, affordances, artifacts and protocols distributed through environments, holding "the fragments of society that have yet to be rationalized." Automation deposits decisions there (Fuller: a deliberated choice congeals into a device or environment and need not be reviewed), producing a rift between infrastructural time and cognitive time. Drive is therefore momentum and inertia, not motive; psychosis is an unreconciled social incongruity; automatic systems surface only on breakdown (the dashboard light). Bateson's "I know the way to Cambridge" is the phenomenological anchor; the autonomic nervous system is the model, read as the highest form of intelligence because it frees cognition.
