# ENIAC Moment

> A working definition written for this wiki from the reading notes; not Antikythera's own wording. From Antikythera Wiki (https://antikythera.wiki/terms/eniac-moment), an independent guide to Antikythera's published work.

Agüera y Arcas's periodization device in *What Is Intelligence?*: "The decisive moment for traditional computing came when special-purpose computers gave way to general-purpose ones, starting with the ENIAC in 1945. Everything afterward was an exponential climb in performance, not a discrete transition. In the same vein, AGI has already undergone its 'ENIAC moment' with the transition from narrow learning of predefined tasks to general AI," based on unsupervised sequence prediction and in-context learning. What follows is "dramatic, even exponential, but the changes are of degree, not of kind" — so arguing over when the climb "counts" as AGI is goalpost-moving. The preface makes the same comparison (today's AI neither complete, reliable nor efficient, "like where we were with general computing when the ENIAC first powered up"). Note the analogy implies a crisp threshold that the book's own multidimensional view of generality softens.
