*Zurich, August 19, 2032*. The Association for Business Sustainability (ABS), a coalition of leading, responsible global businesses with a combined gross economic footprint exceeding $80 trillion, is proud to announce its formation.

Summary#

Suhail Malik's scenario is three press releases, dated 2032, 2047, and 2054, from a business lobby that grows from the Association for Business Sustainability in Zurich into the International Consortium for Corporate Welfare in Istanbul, with names in Chinese and Arabic added as it moves east. Across the three, insurers withdraw coverage, central banks are asked to pool quantitative easing into a climate fund, and automated pricing architectures start to fail.

The argument#

Malik's claim is carried entirely by register. The releases never describe a world; they describe a lobby's demands, and the world is inferred from what the demands have to concede. In 2032 the complaint is climate-accountability litigation and shrinking liability cover, framed as an inflation risk to consumers. By 2047 the merged consortium wants central banks to consolidate easing into a "transnational climate reparation fund" with low entry requirements and wants AI-pricing regulations relaxed to allow AI-driven micro credit-default-swap markets. By 2054 the CEO warns that "automated insurance mechanisms once designed to safeguard markets are now amplifying inefficiencies," that regionally inconsistent pricing models are generating "dangerous friction," and that transactions are delayed by seconds or minutes. The implied argument is that corporate welfare becomes the last stabiliser of a pricing system that automation has made both hemispherical and brittle, and that "a return to historical pricing systems is no longer viable."

Section by section#

Each release follows the genre exactly: boilerplate self-description, a quoted executive (JooYin Broadmasters of ReduxConglomero International, Exelsior Zhang, Za'lahya), a call to action, END. The satire lies in the drift of vocabulary from "sustainability" to "stability" to "welfare," and from a combined footprint of "$80 trillion" to "critical system alert." The multilingual name of the consortium tracks the collection's premise that institutions relocate across stacks. The provocation is that the most powerful actors in the world can only speak in this voice, and that the voice cannot name a solution.

Key concepts#

  • Corporate welfare — public backstopping of business continuity, here requested openly as the successor to insurance and conventional monetary policy.
  • Price architecture — the automated, regionally distinct systems for contract issuance and premium resetting whose mutual incompatibility becomes the crisis.
  • AI-driven microCDS markets — ultrafast automated credit-default swaps proposed in 2047 as a stabiliser, and by 2054 part of the instability.

Connections#

Part of Hemispherical Stacks. It belongs with Shemakov's Fundable Earth and Lucien Bratton's The Great Taiwan Freeze as a study of finance as the medium of sovereignty, but where those two present new instruments working as designed, Malik shows the instruments failing and their sponsors asking the state for help.
