# Substrate Ontology

The implicit "cultural and operational vision" every design practice holds of how natural and artificial are divided and what role matter plays at that boundary. Tripaldi stages three: the *golem* (inert clay animated by a word — substrate indifference; Wiener's telegraphable human, OpenWorm's digital worm), the *homunculus* (lively, festering matter whose growth is dictated "by materiality itself" — substrate agency), and SBI's third ontology, "unbound" from both, in which substrates "actively give rise to parallel forms of life and intelligence." Plural by design via Hui's technodiversity. Useful lens for asking of any Antikythera work whether its "substrate" is a container word or an agent.
